With yearbooks now available for students to pick up, many students may be wondering how exactly the yearbook is made. Maybe you’re a senior, with three of them sitting on a shelf back home and your final one being given to you this past Friday. Or maybe you’re a freshman, and this is the year you’ll get your first. Either way, a lot of time and effort goes into making the yearbook. But, how exactly do you make a yearbook?
Well, to make the yearbook, you have to take the yearbook class. Mr. Randall, the Yearbook teacher and advisor, explains that yearbook is a “project based class,” the project being…the yearbook! Students who take the class are expected to take pictures, build pages, and interview people year-round in order to create a fun and comprehensive yearbook. He explains that students “go to as many school events as possible and take photos, so that we don’t miss anything.” This includes everything from games and performances to plays and school events. They then proceed to interview a wide variety of people in order to be able to include a multitude of stories within the book.
How long does it take to make the yearbook? Well, the answer is pretty obvious—the whole year. From the beginning of the school year with Homecoming and football games, to the end of the year with Prom and Theatre Plays, the yearbook students are constantly working, taking pictures and creating pages. Mr. Randall stresses that while the class may seem easy, it’s important to get right. If students in the class don’t complete their work, the yearbook doesn’t get done. This does make the class a bit stressful at times, but overall, the class is a lot of fun! It provides students with fun opportunities to experience a lot of different events, and leave their mark on the yearbook.
The biggest question most students have however is how is the theme for the yearbook chosen? Well, it changes depending on the students who take the class. If one year someone comes in with a good theme, the class works together and focuses on that theme. If no one really has an idea, then the class workshops some ideas and does some exercises to come up with a few, then votes on the ultimate theme.
Overall, a lot of hard work, time, and dedication goes into making Union’s Yearbook. With year-long dedication, the students in the class work together to create a fun yearbook filled with memories in picture form. Each one is unique and filled with creativity. Many students have enjoyed the VHS theme for this year. Who knows what next year has in store?
