Have you ever heard of Union’s Interact Club? Such a fascinating name, with such a fantastic impact. Interact is an internationally recognized volunteer club – similar to that of Key Club. This club is notable for its long-standing support and involvement in our local community.
Interact has brought the Union High School name a lot of glory. For example, their volunteer work includes planting trees, pulling ivy in our local trails and parks, preparing meals for children in hospitals, and helping manage marathons; this work is not only positive – it’s inspiring.
So far, one of their most impactful events recently involved packaging 10,000 meals for various food donation organizations, including Share, FISH, and Martha’s Pantry. The event was hosted by Interact’s parent club – Rotary International which was founded in 1905, as a global service organization. Rotary’s mission is to “provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through [the] fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.” Alison Johnston, the leader of the Rotary Club of Vancouver Sunrise invited Union’s Interact Club to the event where they worked alongside people of many different backgrounds. Interact typically gets involved with one major Rotary International event every year, a huge one last year was the awakening of the Rose Garden, in downtown Vancouver. Not only are these events an honor for Interact, they’re an honor for our high school.
A major part of Interact is their leadership, their co-leaders Sophie Huang and Avery Wong work alongside their Treasurer (Gordon Huang), Secretary (Joseph Wei), and Webmaster (William Lu) to organize and execute events. All students are allowed to get involved in the action. Currently, they host their club meetings on the first Monday of every month, supervised by Mr. Wiitanen. Due to its constant events, Interact is a great club to join to get involved in your community and support your college applications. They welcome members at any point in the school year – including the next school year. Keep up the great work Interact!
